Acupuncture for Headaches

The World Health Organization estimates that up to three-quarters of all adults have suffered a headache this year. Someone with chronic headaches or chronic migraines experiences headaches several times a month. Fortunately, you can get pain relief from headaches from acupuncture. Johnson Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Lincoln, NE explains how.

.

What Is Acupuncture?

Modern acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese medicine that is centuries old. Very thin, sterile stainless steel needles are placed in strategic areas of the body to relieve pain and promote relaxation. Needles may be moved by hand from the acupuncturist or chiropractor or given mild electric stimulation.

How Many Times Are the Needles Used?

Needles are never reused. They are disposed of after they are used just one time.

How Does Acupuncture Help With Headaches and Migraines?

Acupuncture effectively provides pain relief for a variety of chronic conditions like headaches and migraines. The needles trigger the body to release chemicals that help relieve pain and promote relaxation. These chemicals include norephedrine, enkephalin, and endorphins. Harvard Medical School notes that acupuncture works with the brain to release serotonin, which helps regulate moods.

How Effective Is Acupuncture for Headaches and Migraines?

The American Migraine Foundation, a non-profit to help with migraine research and education, notes that acupuncture can help many people suffering from migraines. They recommend that at least six acupuncture sessions are needed to feel any benefits. These benefits include not having headaches or migraines as frequently or having headaches or migraines with less intensity.

What Is an Acupuncture Session Like?

An acupuncture session lasts less than an hour. Needles are usually placed in the back or neck since those areas are thought to be more active with nerves that transmit pain messages to the brain. About eight to fifteen needles are used, in most cases it doesn't even hurt. Then you rest for 20- to 30 minutes, and then the needles are removed. Many people get so relaxed during an acupuncture session that they fall asleep.
