Acupuncture and Women's Health

Recent scientific research has proven the link between an ancient healing art and helping women have babies.  Infertility can be a big problem for women, and many are forced to spend thousands of dollars on treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).  Several new studies show that Acupuncture is helpful in treating infertility.

The easiest way to understand acupuncture is in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  TCM has 4 separate and distinct branches.

1)  Chemical -- The human body is chemical in nature.  A blood test measures the chemicals in the body, and may show low hemoglobin for example.  This abnormal finding should be brought back into “normal limits” or balance.  In modern medicine this would usually involve a drug.  TCM existed before drugs were invented, and so herbs or plant based medicines are often used to treat chemical imbalances.

2)  Structural – The human body is structural in nature.  The frame is made up of the bones of the spine and extremities, and includes the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Accidents and injuries or repetition and stress can cause structural problems to occur.  Chiropractic is the most modern and scientific treatment for correcting structural problems.

3)  Mind/body balance.  This would include any and all exercises or techniques used to bring about inner peace, to calm the mind, or enhance the spirit.  The technique of Qi Gong has been used for thousands of years.  It involves breathing exercises and mental focus to improve the energy flow in the body.  You may have seen people doing Tai Chi exercises, which are smooth and rhythmic movements.  Tai Chi and all of the martial arts have Qi Gong as their common origin.

4)  Energy – The human body is bio-electrical in nature.  Bio-electrical energy can be measured, in fact many modern medical tests measure electrical activity in the body.  For example, EKGs measure electrical activity in the heart, and EEGs measure electrical activity in the brain.  There is no question that the body has a bio-electrical form of energy in it, but it is important to understand that energy problems cannot be treated with chemicals.  Acupuncture is the type of treatment that balances energy problems.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by balancing the bio-electrical energy in the body.  By stimulating acupuncture points on the surface of the body, one can change the flow of energy inside the body.  With modern technology, there are now ways to use computers to measure and graph the flow of energy in the body.  Acupuncture can be done with needles, or with laser or electrical energy.

What does the research say about acupuncture and pregnancy?

One recent study shows that electrical stimulation of acupuncture points helps increase ovarian blood flow, which is important for regular ovulation in women.  Another study has shown that acupuncture treatment helped improve ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.  Another study showed that acupuncture treatment increases the chances of successful implantation with IVF, as well as ongoing pregnancy, and live birth rates.
